NATIONAL DOMESTIC VIOLENCE/ABUSE HOTLINE (TTY)800-787-3224

Many U.S. local and state agencies provide crisis hotlines, counseling, legal referrals and advocacy, and operate community education programs. If they don't have TTY's they can be contacted through a relay operator (711) in the U.S. or by fax or e-mail. They are usually listed in the phone directory under government agencies or social services.

If you contact a crisis hotline, here are some things they may be able to help you with:

Crisis Counseling
Safety Planning
Information and Referral
Court Accompaniment
Legal Advocacy
Medical Advocacy
Shelter Assessment and Intake
Temporary Protective Orders
Educational Services
Parenting and Children's programs
Psychotherapy Services

Shelter Services are legally required to provide interpreters, but sadly they don't always know this, and they often don't have interpreters who are immediately available. They also don't usually have TTYs, flashing lights or other accommodations that are essential for Deaf women to feel they are safe, included, and they are not alone. But they do provide important services in times of crisis.

Womens' Shelters can provide:

Basic Needs and Safety
Advocacy / Case Management
Court Accompaniment
Counseling
Information and Referral
Children's Programs
Life Skills Workshops

All crisis hotlines are accessible through relay services (711) in the U.S., but here are a few you can reach directly by TTY:

ADWAS (Abused Deaf Women's Advocacy Services)

ADWAS is for Deaf, Deaf-Blind, and Hard of Hearing victims of domestic violence and sexual assault in the Seattle/King County and South Snohomish County areas of Western Washington, although, if a victim moves here to escape her abuser, then she is considered a resident of Seattle/King County (or S. Sno. Co.)

DWAV in California has sadly closed its doors,
but a new agency called Deaf Hope will be opening
for Bay Area residents soon:
Website: http://deaf-hope.org
DeafHope will be providing advocacy services to Deaf survivors in the Bay Area, effective immediately. Shortly, we will be announcing our 24-hour TTY hotline and community office information.

If you or anyone you know are experiencing domestic violence and/or sexual assault, please contact DeafHope at services@deaf-hope.org. An advocate will be in contact with you.
